Top 10 Health Apps in Uganda for Doctors and Patients (2026)

best health apps in uganda

The top 10 health apps in Uganda in 2026 are not all apps in the Play Store sense. The services Ugandans use most run on USSD codes, WhatsApp and mobile money as much as on downloads, because that is how the country is connected. The Uganda Communications Commission’s market report for April to June 2026 counts 49.0 million active mobile subscriptions, 37.8 million mobile money subscriptions and 19.7 million mobile internet subscriptions, with 20.5 million smartphones against 24.8 million feature phones. More people can pay by phone than can open an app, and the best services are built for that.

This list ranks ten services a doctor or patient in Uganda can use today: telemedicine and doctor consultation, medicine delivery, emergency response, health savings and insurance, and tools for clinicians and community health workers. We left out clinic software and pharmacy software products, which belong in a buyer’s guide rather than a patient list; if that is what you are looking for, start with our page on EMR software in Uganda.

How we ranked the best health apps in Uganda

Any list of the best health apps in Uganda has to start with what “active” means. Each service was checked against five questions, and the ranking weights them in this order.

The best health apps in Uganda in 2026, ranked

1. Rocket Health: telemedicine with a clinic, lab and pharmacy behind it

Rocket Health is run by The Medical Concierge Group, a Kampala company founded in 2012 that raised a Series A in 2022 to scale the model across Africa. It is the most complete telemedicine service in Uganda because the consultation is only the start: the Rocket Health e-shop lists doctor consultations by phone or WhatsApp, mobile lab sample collection, pharmacy delivery, chronic care plans, home vaccinations and in-clinic specialist visits at its Gayaza clinic. Telemedicine covers the whole country; lab pickup and vaccination run within about 30 km of Kampala. Patients reach it on USSD *280#, WhatsApp or a toll-free line, and pay by mobile money, card, insurance or the Rocket Health wallet. There is no consumer app on Google Play, which is a deliberate choice for a USSD-first market, and the only “Rocket Health” app you will find there is an unrelated Indian service. For a patient asking which telemedicine apps in Uganda can send a nurse to the house, this is the answer.

2. Zuri Health on MTN: chat with a doctor from UGX 500 a day

Zuri Health is a Kenyan telehealth company delivering a doctor-chat service in Uganda through MTN. The MTN Zuri page and its FAQ describe first-level consultations with licensed doctors by SMS, USSD *158# and WhatsApp, with prescriptions where allowed, referrals, nutritionist chat, lab bookings with home sample collection and medication ordering. Pricing is airtime or mobile money deducted: SMS and USSD access from UGX 500 a day, 1,000 a week or 2,000 a month, and WhatsApp access from UGX 1,300 a day. Service hours are 8am to 5pm. Uganda Radio Network reported the launch in May 2026 as a push against self-medication. Zuri also publishes patient and doctor apps on Google Play, both updated in September 2026, but in Uganda the USSD and WhatsApp channels are the product. It ranks second because the price point and MTN distribution give it the widest potential reach of any doctor booking app in Uganda, while the limited hours and chat-only format keep it below Rocket Health.

3. clinicPesa: save and borrow for medical bills, spent at registered clinics

clinicPesa solves the problem that stops most Ugandans from seeing a doctor: the bill. The clinicPesa site describes a health wallet where users save from UGX 500 and earn interest, and borrow between UGX 3,000 and 3,000,000 for a 7% fee repayable in 30 days, with the money spent only at registered clinics, hospitals and pharmacies. It runs on MTN mobile money through USSD *165*44#, on the web and on an Android app with more than 10,000 installs, last updated in July 2026. MTN Uganda describes the public launch of the partnership in late 2022, and the company lists the Ministry of Health, Swiss Re and Equity Bank among its partners. For clinic owners it has a second use: a facility account that lets the clinic accept clinicPesa payments, which is worth pairing with our guide to mobile payments for Ugandan clinics.

4. First Pharmacy: online pharmacy with delivery across Uganda

First Pharmacy is the strongest of the online pharmacy apps in Uganda on the evidence we could check. First Pharmacy Uganda Limited runs branches in Wandegeya and Mulago and delivers medicines, prescription items and baby products anywhere in Uganda, with pharmacist advice by phone. Its Android app shows more than 50,000 installs, a listed rating of 5.0 from about 1,060 reviews, and an update in July 2026; the company site carried new posts as recently as October 2026. Patients upload a prescription or order over the counter items and pay on delivery or by mobile money. A listed rating that high across a thousand reviews is unusual, so treat it as a store signal rather than a verdict, but the operating evidence is solid.

5. AAR Insurance Uganda: the member app that finds a clinic and tracks a claim

For insured patients, the most used daily tool is the insurer’s app. AAR Insurance Uganda has operated in the country since 1984 and its Android app lets members locate network hospitals and clinics, view their policy, benefits and renewal date, monitor how much cover they have used, file and track claims, and reach support by chat. It carries a 4.5 rating and was updated on 14 October 2026. AAR’s products run from corporate schemes to Ddwaliro Care, a low-cost plan the company says works at more than 150 affiliated hospitals. The app matters to clinic owners too: patients increasingly check whether a clinic is in network before they walk in.

6. SelfCareUG: the Ministry of Health self-care app

Published under the Ministry of Health on Google Play, SelfCareUG gives text and video tutorials that guide people through self-care, self-awareness and self-management, with referral options when a condition needs a clinician. Coverage of the National Community Health Strategy in September 2025 placed it within the Ministry’s push on prevention, quoting the Ministry’s view that most conditions presented at hospitals are preventable. It is an information app rather than a service, which is why it sits mid-table, but it is the only official patient-facing health education app in the country, updated in June 2026.

7. Dial 912: the Ministry of Health emergency ambulance app

Uganda’s single emergency number is 912, and the Ministry of Health has published a companion Dial 912 NEMS app that lets a caller request an ambulance and track it in real time, in English and Luganda. The app is new, with only a handful of installs at the time of writing, and it needs data and GPS. The system behind it is further along: the Ministry said in November 2025 that ambulances covered more than 64% of the country and that 21 highway ambulances had been deployed, and Malteser International describes 912 as the single national emergency number with regional dispatch centres planned. For a clinic, the practical step is to put 912 on the wall and in the referral protocol now, and to install the app once it has matured.

8. eCHIS Uganda: the digital register for Village Health Teams

The Electronic Community Health Information System is the Ministry of Health’s app for Village Health Teams, the community workers who are the first contact for most rural households. The eCHIS Uganda app replaces paper registers with household records, antenatal and postnatal visits, child health, family planning, HIV and TB follow-up, integrated management of childhood illness for under-fives, event-based surveillance, referral tracking and stock management. The Medic-built version shows more than 10,000 installs and a 4.6 rating, updated in February 2026; a second build on OpenSRP is published directly by the Ministry. Private clinics do not use it, but they receive its referrals, and it is the clearest sign of where Uganda’s digital health system is heading.

9. UgaMed: the Uganda Clinical Guidelines in your pocket

Among the top medical apps used by doctors in Uganda, the one with the most direct clinical use is the simplest. UgaMed gives structured access to the Uganda Clinical Guidelines 2023, the Ministry of Health’s standard treatment reference, alongside WHO, MedlinePlus and PubMed references. It is built by an independent developer, says so on its listing, and has a small install base, updated in April 2026. Clinical officers and doctors in facilities without reliable internet can keep the national guidelines offline. The guidelines themselves remain the authority; the app is a reader.

10. Mobi CHP by MobiKlinic: connecting community health workers to doctors

MobiKlinic is a Kampala health-tech company founded in 2019. Its Mobi CHP app lets a community health provider record a client’s details and symptoms, chat with a designated doctor, and look up nearby facilities and ambulances. Gavi’s VaccinesWork reported in January 2024 that the network had 550 community health workers, 220 of them using the app, across ten rural health centres in Buikwe, Kampala and Rakai, serving more than 40,000 people in Buikwe alone. The app was updated in August 2026 and carries a 4.5 rating from a small base. It ranks tenth on reach, but it is the model most private clinics could borrow: a clinician on call for the community workers who refer to them.

Two more worth knowing

Two services narrowly missed the ten. Both are worth a look if you are shortlisting the best health apps in Uganda for a specific job.

  • Ug MoH eLearning. The Ministry of Health’s offline-first training app for Village Health Teams, community health extension workers and facility staff, covering the official curriculum including surveillance. Rated 4.5 on Google Play and updated in March 2026. It is a training tool rather than a care service, so it sits outside the ten.
  • My Musawo. A Ugandan patient app where users put questions to health experts and join community discussions; “musawo” is Luganda for doctor. The Daily Monitor profiled it in 2023 with about 20 doctors on the platform. Its Play listing shows a 4.5 rating from a small base and a last update in August 2025, so check it is still answering before you recommend it.

Best apps to book a doctor appointment in Uganda: what to expect

Readers searching for a doctor booking app in Uganda will notice the list has no standalone booking marketplace. That reflects the market. Appointment booking in Uganda happens inside telemedicine services, inside insurer apps, and on WhatsApp with the clinic directly. Rocket Health and Zuri Health both book the consultation as part of the service; AAR’s app finds an in-network clinic; and most private clinics take bookings over WhatsApp. For a clinic owner, that last channel is the one to get right, which is why our guide to clinic automation in Uganda starts with the front desk. Apps that once promised standalone booking, such as several launched between 2016 and 2020, could not be confirmed as operating in 2026 and are not listed.

What this means for a clinic in Uganda

Three patterns in the best health apps in Uganda should shape how a clinic runs. First, patients pay by phone: a clinic without mobile money and a facility account on at least one health wallet turns business away. Second, telemedicine apps in Uganda are now a competitor and a referral source at the same time; a clinic that answers WhatsApp within minutes keeps the patients that Zuri and Rocket Health would otherwise consult. Third, the Ministry’s own digital systems, eCHIS for community workers and the 912 dispatch network, are the systems a clinic’s referrals will flow through. The Ministry’s digital health strategic plan set the direction for patient-level digital records and telehealth guidelines in 2021; the apps above are what has shipped since. If you are still setting up, our guide on how to open a clinic in Uganda covers the licensing side.

Where clinic software fits

None of the ten apps runs the clinic. The patient record, the prescription, the invoice and the mobile money receipt still have to live somewhere the clinician and the front desk can both see. Easy Clinic’s EMR for clinics in Uganda records the consultation and prescription, issues the bill and tracks mobile money payments against it, and sends WhatsApp reminders and follow-ups, so the clinic can meet patients on the channels this list shows they already use. The features page lists what it handles at each step.

Frequently asked questions about the best health apps in Uganda

What is the best telemedicine app in Uganda?

On completeness of service, Rocket Health, because it combines a doctor consultation with lab pickup, pharmacy delivery and a physical clinic. On price and reach, Zuri Health on MTN, which starts at UGX 500 a day over USSD and WhatsApp.

Is there a doctor booking app in Uganda?

Not as a standalone marketplace with national coverage. Bookings happen inside telemedicine services, insurer apps and clinic WhatsApp lines. Services that promised this between 2016 and 2020 could not be confirmed as active in 2026.

Which online pharmacy apps in Uganda deliver medicines?

First Pharmacy delivers across Uganda from its Kampala branches, and Rocket Health delivers pharmacy orders as part of its telemedicine service. Both take mobile money.

Which health apps do doctors in Uganda use?

For clinical reference, UgaMed carries the Uganda Clinical Guidelines 2023 offline. For community-linked practice, Mobi CHP connects doctors to community health workers. Doctors working with Village Health Teams will also see referrals from eCHIS.

Does Uganda have an official emergency app?

The Ministry of Health has published the Dial 912 NEMS app for ambulance requests and tracking. It is new and has few installs, so the phone number 912 remains the reliable route.

Can patients pay for care through an app?

Yes. clinicPesa provides health savings and medical loans spent at registered facilities over USSD and an app, and most services on this list accept MTN and Airtel mobile money.

Why are no clinic management apps on this list?

They are software a clinic buys, not a service a patient or doctor uses day to day, so they belong in a buyer’s guide. Our EMR software in Uganda page covers that choice.

How did you check that each app is active?

Each entry’s Google Play listing, company website, Ministry page or a 2025 to 2026 news report was opened on 15 October 2026 and the last update date recorded. Apps without evidence of activity since 2025 were left out.

Conclusion

The best health apps in Uganda in 2026 share one design choice: they meet people on USSD, WhatsApp and mobile money first, and on a downloaded app second. Rocket Health and Zuri Health lead on care, clinicPesa and AAR on paying for it, First Pharmacy on getting medicine to the door, and the Ministry of Health’s own apps on the system underneath. Telemedicine apps in Uganda are now part of how patients find a doctor, and any clinic that wants to be found should run its own channels the same way.
